SUMMARY Grubinko A.V. Ukrainian–British relations in 1991–2004 (political and military cooperation). – Manuscript. Thesis for a candidate degree in historical sciences, speciality 07.00.02 – World History. – The Kyiv Slavonic University. – Kyiv, 2007. The dissertation is the first comprehensive historical research of the main tendencies of the development and peculiarities of realization of cooperation between Ukraine and Great Britain (political as well as military spheres) in 1991-2004 in the context of contemporary Eurointegration processes and forming of a modern security system in Europe. There have been considered historical prerequisites of the making of intergovernmental relations in new historical settings. The dissertation elucidates the particularities of forming and the structure of the contractual and legal basis of bilateral intergovernmental cooperation. There has been clarified that the basis embraces different directions and spheres of cooperation. Russia, the USA and the EU have been defined as the dominant geopolitical factors influencing the Ukrainian-British relations. Their role and significance underwent certain transformations within the research period. Unlike the influences of the USA remaining predominantly great and increasing over the last period (2002-2004), those of Russia underwent some changes from weakening in the middle of the 1990-ies to subsequent strengthening. It is necessary to take into account the factor of the conservative perception of Ukraine as Russia’s actual component by the prevailing part of the British public opinion, which remained unchanged over the whole period of Ukraine’s independence till the well-known events that took place in this country in 2004. Special attention has been paid to the problem of relations between Ukraine and Great Britain in the context of contemporary Eurointegration processes as well as European integration of Ukraine. It has been shown that Great Britain in its policy concerning Ukraine is inclined to connect the orientation towards general policy of the EU and relations between Kyiv and Brussels with moderately pragmatic support of Ukraine’s deepening Eurointegration ambitions and the search of its own interests in this process. At the same time British government’s position is active and positive for Ukraine. It was the British government that made a significant contribution to forming modern strategy of development of relations between Ukraine and the EU. This is proved by the initiative granting Ukraine its status of a EU’s “special neighbor” within the framework of the EU’s new policy. There has been offered and substantiated a clear and detailed division of intergovernmental political interrelations between 1991-2004, which include: 1991-1993 – an institutional period; 1994-1996 – the period of bilateral contacts and cooperation stirring up; 1997-2001 – the period of pragmatic mutual relations; 2002-2004 – the period of the decline of the diplomatical activity. It has been ascertained that different levels of saturation, dynamics and effectiveness depending on certain periods characterize the development of the Ukrainian-British political relations. This is chiefly true of the diplomatic collaboration and contacts at intergovernmental and interdepartmental levels. Inter-parliamentary collaboration was unstable and lacked any substantial influence on the development of relations between the countries. The dissertation gives the first analysis ever of the Ukrainian-British relations during the Presidential elections in Ukraine in 2004. It has been ascertained that the beginning of the 21st century sees intensive, complex and structural development of military cooperation between Ukraine and Great Britain in the context of relations between Ukraine and NATO. It concerns in fact all its kinds and directions: 1) military training; 2) peacemaking activity; 3) implementing the programme of teaching Ukrainian soldiers English and law, supplying information services; 4) consulting high-ranking officers of military departments; 5) establishing contacts of all kinds and types of military forces. Cooperation of soldieries of Ukraine and Great Britain became one of the most successful directions in the relations between the countries on the whole. Key words: Ukraine, Great Britain, political relations, bilateral cooperation, European integration, Euro-Atlantic integration, geopolitical factors, European Union, military cooperation, security system.
